mission dolores

Mission Dolores is one of San Francisco’s most active and central neighborhoods. Named for the San Francisco de Asís mission (the oldest building in San Francisco, founded 1776), the area bears a history of diverse populations — from Indigenous peoples to European immigrants to Latino inhabitants today — and stands at the forefront of the city’s culture, art and politics. Award-winning taquerias, provocative street murals, independent theaters, lively bars, family-owned businesses, artisanal cafes, and some of the most accessible public transit in the city can be found here.

Grand, century-old buildings can be found along palm tree-lined Dolores, Church, and Guerrero streets. Smaller Victorian cottages dot the quiet cross streets and art-filled alleys. Relatively little housing has been built in recent years as longtime residents combat emergent gentrification evidenced by new multi-million dollar single-family houses and luxury condo buildings catering to young high-income earners.

Dolores Park is perhaps the most popular neighborhood park in San Francisco, packed with people enjoying the good life on any given sunny weekend. It also hosts summer outdoor movie nights and various Pride Week celebrations. Within a block or two, Bi-Rite Market, Bi-Rite Creamery, Dolores Park Cafe, and Tartine Bakery are bound to have a line-up of locals looking to fuel their day.
