The Farallon Islands are home to the Muerre Sea Birds. Unfortunately during the gold rush, there was an egg rush. The Pacific Egg company was formed and they gathered these eggs as they were larger and eggs were seen as a wealthy food item at the time (a status symbol). They gathered the eggs and brought them back to SF. The bird population dropped dramatically and decades later was banned. All our food needed to be shipped from Willamette Valley as most farmers left to go digging for gold in the sierras. From the main strip to the side tributaries, sidewalks were slammed & patios were packed!
