Live Like Bogart & Bacall In This Telegraph Hill Penthouse
A rare example of Streamline Moderne architecture in San Francisco, the Malloch Building at 1360 Montgomery Street gained notoriety with its silver screen debut in 1947. In the film noir Dark Passage, Irene Jansen (Lauren Bacall) lived in the high style apartment building and it was there that she assisted Vincent Perry (Humphrey Bogart) in the plot to prove his innocence. At the time, owners Jack and John Rolph Malloch occupied the two penthouse units and rented out the lower floors.

By the end of the 20th century, the Malloch Building had been subdivided into condominiums and its 12 residences were sold. Between 2017 and 2020, however, the penthouses encompassing the entire 4th floor and totaling more than 2,600 square feet were purchased by a single owner in separate off-market transactions. A subsequent listing for one of them, 1360 Montgomery Street #11, hints that merging the two units into one “much larger” home may have been planned.

Alas, with no merger executed and that unit sold, 1360 Montgomery Street #12 — the penthouse located directly above Lauren Bacall’s on-screen apartment — is now offered for sale. Originally listed for $3 million, the 2-bedroom and 2-bathroom condominium overlooking Telegraph Hill‘s Filbert Steps has since been reduced to $2,400,000.
Curved walls, glass block windows, wood-burning fireplace and an art deco wet bar are just a few of the home’s remarkably intact original features. But the real showstopper is an expansive private terrace with views galore and providing access to a 2nd floor bedroom suite — or, rather, party room.
This opportunity to reimagine the glamour of a bygone era is calling. Contact us today to arrange a private showing.
