lower haight
Down the hill from legendary Haight Ashbury is its understated but perhaps equally rebellious (and filled with Victorians!) neighbor, Lower Haight. Colorful street art adorns the sides of various bars, salons, and cheap eats from a diverse range of cuisines. Most businesses have that hole-in-the-wall vibe and feel like true neighborhood hangouts with a decidedly “grungy, post-punk bohemian” atmosphere and a diverse crowd.

Lower Haight is home to a large number of historic Victorians, though generally less ornate and grand than those of Haight Ashbury. Those living spaces are well-suited for the neighborhood’s younger population, and residents who prefer to spend time socializing at Duboce Park, Alamo Square, or a nearby watering hole.
You don’t have to travel far to get your essentials in the neighborhood: the longstanding Haight Fillmore Whole Foods has fresh produce, Santa Clara Market has organic groceries, and Safeway is a few blocks away. Also, you can always hop on a bike and ride the Wiggle to get anywhere in the city you need to go.
